✅ Punch List Generator
Create organized punch lists for project closeout. Track deficiencies by location, trade, and priority.
What is a Punch List?
A punch list (also called a snag list) documents items that need to be completed or corrected before final acceptance. It's one of the last steps before project closeout and final payment.
Interactive Generator
Add items with location, description, trade, priority, due date, and status. The generated PDF includes an item summary and formatted table.
Punch List Best Practices
Organization Methods
| Method | Best For | Example |
|---|---|---|
| By Location | Buildings, floors | "2nd Floor, Room 201" |
| By Trade | Coordinating subs | "Electrical", "Painting" |
| By Priority | Tight deadlines | "Critical", "Minor" |
| By CSI Division | Large projects | "Division 09 - Finishes" |
What to Include
Each punch list item should have:
- Item number — Unique identifier for tracking
- Location — Specific room, floor, grid line
- Description — Clear description of the deficiency
- Responsible party — Trade or subcontractor
- Priority — Critical / Standard / Minor
- Due date — When it must be completed
- Status — Open / In Progress / Complete / Verified
Punch List Walkthrough Tips
Walk the project with the owner/architect in a systematic pattern — same direction, same sequence, every time. This ensures nothing gets missed.
- Schedule strategically — Do walkthrough when work is substantially complete, not 90% done
- Bring the right tools — Clipboard, camera, flashlight, ladder, tape measure
- Mark items on site — Blue tape is standard for marking deficiencies
- Be specific — "Paint touch-up needed" is vague; "Touch-up paint on door frame, Room 201, east wall" is actionable
- Photo everything — Reference photos eliminate disputes
- Set realistic deadlines — Allow time for material procurement
Punch List vs. Warranty Items
| Punch List | Warranty |
|---|---|
| Before final completion | After final completion |
| Deficiencies from construction | Issues that develop over time |
| Must complete for final payment | Covered under warranty period |
| Contractor's responsibility | May involve manufacturer |
Final payment and retainage release are typically tied to punch list completion. Don't release final payment until all items are verified complete.
