California Deadlines Quick Reference
| Document | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Preliminary Notice | 20 days from first furnishing |
| Mechanics Lien (with NOC) | GC: 60 days / Sub: 30 days |
| Mechanics Lien (no NOC) | 90 days from completion |
| Foreclosure Lawsuit | 90 days from recording lien |
How to Calculate Your Deadlines
Step 1: When Did You Start?
Your first day furnishing labor, materials, or equipment to the project.
Step 2: Did the Owner File a NOC?
Check with the county recorder. A Notice of Completion shortens your deadlines.
Step 3: Calculate Your Dates
If NO Notice of Completion:
- Prelim: First furnish date + 20 days
- Lien: Completion date + 90 days
- Foreclose: Lien recording + 90 days
If Notice of Completion WAS filed:
- Prelim: First furnish date + 20 days
- Lien (GC): NOC recording + 60 days
- Lien (Sub): NOC recording + 30 days
- Foreclose: Lien recording + 90 days
Deadlines Are Strict
California courts rarely grant extensions. If you're close to a deadline, file immediately.
