π§ Fencing Calculator
Calculate materials needed for chain link, wood, vinyl, and other fence types.
Quick Formulaβ
Linear Feetβ
Linear Feet = Perimeter of Area to Fence
Number of Sectionsβ
Sections = Linear Feet Γ· Section Length
Posts Neededβ
Posts = Sections + 1 (for end post) + Gates
Chain Link Fencingβ
Materials Per 100 Linear Feetβ
| Material | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | 100 LF | Standard 6' height |
| Posts | 11-12 | 8-10' spacing |
| Top rail | 100 LF | 1-1/4" or 1-3/8" |
| Tension wire | 100 LF | Bottom tension |
| Ties | 100-150 | Wire ties |
| Gate | 1 | If needed |
Post Spacingβ
| Height | Post Spacing | Post Size |
|---|---|---|
| 4' | 10' | 2" OD |
| 6' | 8-10' | 2-3/8" OD |
| 8' | 8' | 2-3/8" OD |
Wood Fencingβ
Materials Per 100 Linear Feet (6' Privacy)β
| Material | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Posts | 11-12 | 8' spacing, 8' long |
| Rails | 200 LF | 3 rails per section |
| Pickets | 200-250 | Depends on spacing |
| Concrete | 1-2 CY | For post footings |
| Hardware | 1 set | Per section |
Picket Spacingβ
| Spacing | Pickets per 8' Section |
|---|---|
| No gap | 24-26 |
| 1/2" gap | 20-22 |
| 1" gap | 18-20 |
Vinyl Fencingβ
Materials Per 100 Linear Feetβ
| Material | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sections | 10-12 | 8' sections |
| Posts | 11-12 | 8' spacing |
| Post caps | 11-12 | Decorative caps |
| Concrete | 1-2 CY | For post footings |
Common Calculationsβ
Example: 100' Γ 100' Yardβ
Perimeter:
- Perimeter = (100 + 100) Γ 2 = 400 linear feet
Chain Link (6'):
- Fabric: 400 LF
- Top rail: 400 LF
- Tension wire: 400 LF
Wood Privacy (6'):
- Rails: 400 Γ 3 = 1,200 LF
- Pickets: 400 Γ 20 = 8,000 pickets (1/2" spacing)
- Concrete: 51 Γ 0.5 CF = 25.5 CF = ~1 CY
Gate Considerationsβ
Standard Gate Sizesβ
| Type | Width | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestrian | 3-4' | Walk-through |
| Single vehicle | 10-12' | Car, truck |
| Double vehicle | 16-20' | Large vehicles |
Gate Materialsβ
- Gate frame - Match fence material
- Hinges - 2-3 hinges per gate
- Latch - Gate latch
- Post reinforcement - Heavier posts for gates
Post Footingsβ
Concrete Volumeβ
Volume = Ο Γ radiusΒ² Γ depth
Example: 8" diameter Γ 3' deep
- Radius = 4" = 0.33 feet
- Volume = 3.14 Γ 0.33Β² Γ 3 = 1.03 cubic feet
- Per post: ~0.5-1.0 cubic feet
Waste Factorβ
Add 5-10% for:
- Cutting
- Waste
- Mistakes

Plan for Gates
Don't forget to account for gates in your material calculations. Gates require heavier posts and additional hardware.
