💪 Back Injury Prevention

Topic: Preventing back injuries on the jobsite Duration: 5-7 minutes Best for: All crews - back injuries are common

The Stats

  • Back injuries are the #1 cause of lost work days
  • 25% of construction injuries are back-related
  • Most back injuries are preventable

Proper Lifting Technique

The Right Way

  1. Plan the lift - Check weight, path, destination
  2. Get close - Stand close to the load
  3. Wide stance - Feet shoulder-width apart
  4. Bend knees - Not your back
  5. Grip firmly - Get good grip
  6. Lift with legs - Straighten legs, keep back straight
  7. Keep load close - Hold load close to body
  8. Don't twist - Turn with feet, not back

When to Get Help

Don't lift alone if:

  • Load is too heavy
  • Load is awkward
  • Load blocks your view
  • You're not sure you can handle it

Use:

  • Mechanical aids - Carts, dollies, forklifts
  • Team lifting - Get help from coworker
  • Break it down - Smaller loads

Stretching

Before Work

  • Warm up - Light activity before heavy lifting
  • Stretch - Back, legs, arms
  • Stay flexible - Regular stretching helps
